Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (April 15, 1452 — May 2, 1519) is the title character and central protagonist of the Starz Original Series: Da Vinci's Demons. He is an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. He is portrayed by actor Tom Riley.

Leonardo da Vinci is a troubled genius, one who is hungry for knowledge but frustrated that he has not yet found his true calling. He is represented as a bastard who  grows up as a peasant, and somebody who opposes religion and religious notions—consequently, he is a social outcast.

While his genius is uplifting, it also has a destructive component—both to him and the world at large. As a bastard, he yearns for legitimacy; most notably with his father. He is haunted by the absence of his mother, and the mystery surrounding her disappearance. He yearns profoundly to be able to draw her face, as it is the only thing he has [partially] seen that he is unable to draw. Wounded by his father’s disdain, he looks for a surrogate father in both Andrea Verrocchio and the Turk.

Da Vinci is educated, but not yet wise. He will come to realize that personal sacrifice is often necessary for the greater good and will make sacrifices for both Florence and those he loves.[1]

In a possible, alternate timestream witnessed by himself while looking for the Book of Leaves in Machu Picchu, Leonardo died in Nanterre, France, in the year 1525, spending his last days chained to a bed as a prisoner of the Labyrinth. Approaching a possible death in its present time, this date quickly changed to indicate Amboise, in the year 1519 (the historically correct one), as well as Machu Picchu, 1478.
